German-born architect and designer Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) was one of the chief promoters of the Bauhaus machine-age philosophy. His Barcelona Chair was designed for the German national pavilion that formed the Barcelona International Exhibition in 1929. Made from a single piece of stainless steel, the frame was originally upholstered in white pig leather. Today the chair has become an icon of the 20th century design.
